Women’s Health
At Blackpool Medical Centre, we provide comprehensive women’s health services tailored to every stage of life. This includes cervical screening (smear tests) through the Cervical Check programme to help detect early signs of cervical cell changes, as well as breast checks and guidance on self-examination to support early detection of breast cancer.
We also offer advice and management for menopause, helping women navigate symptoms with personalised treatment plans, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) where appropriate. Our aim is to support your health and wellbeing with expert, compassionate care.

Family Planning and Contraception
We provide a full range of contraception services, including prescriptions, contraceptive implants, and coil fittings. Under the HSE Free Contraception Scheme, patients aged 17 to 35 can have their consultation, prescription, and fitting costs fully covered. If you had an implant or coil fitted under the scheme before turning 36, your removal and any follow-up checks will also be covered. We are happy to talk through the different options and help you find the method that suits you best.
We offer pre-conception consultations for individuals and couples who are planning a pregnancy. These visits can include advice on lifestyle, nutrition, folic acid, vaccinations, and optimising any existing medical conditions. Where needed, we can also provide referrals and work in partnership with specialist fertility services.
Cervical Screening (Smear Tests)
If you’ve received your Cervical Check invitation, please contact reception to book your smear test appointment.
Cervical screening helps prevent cervical cancer by identifying abnormal cells in the cervix early. It’s not a cancer test, but rather a check on cervical health. Cervical Check, the national screening programme, offers free smear tests to women aged 25 to 65.
Breast Checks
At Blackpool Medical Centre, we want to highlight the importance of breast health for all women. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Ireland, with around 2,700 cases diagnosed annually. While it mainly affects those over 50, younger women—and occasionally men—can also be at risk.
We support BreastCheck, the HSE’s free national screening programme, which invites women aged 50 to 69 for a mammogram every two years. Early detection significantly improves outcomes by identifying cancer in its earliest stages.
We also encourage women of all ages to regularly check their breasts for any lumps or changes. For guidance, we recommend Dr. Ciara Kelly’s helpful video on how to carry out a breast self-examination.
