Childhood Vaccines

Primary Childhood Vaccination Schedule

Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect babies and young children from serious illnesses. The risk of complications from these diseases far outweighs any minor side effects that may occur after Immunisation.

School Vaccine Programme

School Vaccine Programme

As part of the school vaccine programme:

  • Junior Infants are offered the 4-in-1 and MMR vaccines.

  • First-year secondary students are offered the HPV, Tdap, and MenACWY vaccines.

These vaccines are also available to children in special schools or those who are homeschooled and fall within the same age groups.

All vaccines provided through the school vaccination programme are free of charge.

HPV Vaccines

At Blackrock Medical Centre, we strongly support the HPV vaccination programme for both girls and boys. The HPV vaccine has been offered to first-year secondary school girls since 2010, primarily to protect against cervical cancer.

Since September 2019, the programme has expanded to include boys, as HPV can also cause genital warts and various types of cancers, including cancers of the throat, anus, and penis.

Vaccinating both boys and girls helps significantly reduce the spread of HPV and the long-term risks associated with the virus.

HPV-related cancers:

  • Girls: Cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, throat, head and neck

  • Boys: Anus, throat, penis, head and neck

  • Both: Genital warts

Children’s Flu Vaccine

At Blackrock Medical Centre, we offer the nasal flu vaccine free of charge for all children aged 2 to 17. Your child does not need to be in an at-risk group to receive it. The vaccine helps protect children from the flu and also reduces the chance of spreading it to family members, such as parents, siblings, and grandparents.

The nasal flu vaccine has a strong safety record and has been used in the US since 2003 and the UK since 2013.

Cervical Check Screening

If you have received your Cervical Check invitation letter, please contact our reception team to book an appointment.

Cervical screening helps prevent cervical cancer by identifying abnormal cells in the cervix (the lower part of the womb). It is not a cancer test but a check on the cervix’s health. Through the National Cervical Screening Programme, Cervical Check offers free smear tests to women aged 25 to 65.
